Responding to the Reapers
Northwest environmental leaders respond to "The Death of Environmentalism."
Last month in ONEList, we told you about the essay "The Death of Environmentalism" by Michael Shellenberger and Ted Nordhaus (whom our friends over at Grist cheekily christened "The Reapers") and presented a commentary on some of its core ideas from Rick Johnson of Idaho Conservation League. (We also linked to a strongly-worded response from Sierra Club CEO Carl Pope that has gotten wide circulation online.)
Since then, the conversation about the future of the environmental movement has continued within the Northwest environmental community and beyond. In mid-December 2004, ex-Sierra Club President Adam Werbach made a passionate speech to the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco in which he asked "Is Environmentalism Dead?" and answered it with a resounding "yes." In his speech, which you can read or listen to online, he restated and elaborated many of the themes raised in the original "Death of Environmentalism" paper. Adam's speech generated another round of powerful responses from across the conservation community.
This month in ONEList, we present three responses from the Northwest Conservation community:
1) "The Death of Environmentalism? A Response to Adam Werbach" by Tim Greyhavens, Executive Director of Wilburforce Foundation. Wilburforce is one of the leading funders of conservation organizations in our region.
2) "Deeper Green: In Defense of Environmentalism" by Aron Thompson, ONE/Northwest board member.
3) "What Enviros Can Learn From Bjorn Lomborg" by Matt Price, Conservation Voters of BC. Matt's piece places some of these themes in a Canadian context.
