Question Answer

1. What is Pigeonhole?

Pigeonhole is an audience-centric set of extensions of the open source CMS, developed by One/Northwest.

2. How does it work?

Pigeonhole uses metadata to relate content across the entire site.  It attempts to build trust with your site's visitors, engage them, and show them the content in your site that is most relevant to them.

3. Who uses Pigeonhole?

Usually we use Pigeonhole with clients for whose web project with us has included a website strategy portion.  But it can be used by anyone whose site is in Plone.

4. Why won't my content appear in the portlets the way I expect?

The intent of Pigeonhole is not to "game the system" and rig what content shows up in what portlets.  There are a lot of different variables that go into determining what shows up in a given portlet.  If you're assigning your audience, program areas, and page goals consistently and accurately, appropriate content should always appear in your portlets.  Remember to publish events, pages, quizzes, and news items!

5. What do you mean by "audiences"?

Audiences are the specific groups of people your site attempts to target.  Part of the strategy portion of a website project with us is determining who exactly these groups are.

6. What if I want to use only one audience?

You may -- then your Pigeonhole structure will be more driven by what programs you choose and what content items are associated with them.

7. Is there a limit to the number of Audiences or Programs I can use?

No. However, you want to boil it down to the most important areas and people your website is serving. To get the most out of Pigeonhole, think carefully about how your content fits in with your site structure.  Generally, in the neighborhood of 3 to 6 for each category sounds right.

8. Can I change my options for audience or program areas?  Or add new ones?

Not very easily -- please contact ONE/Northwest (we will change the options for free).  We generally discourage whimisically changing the audiences or program areas that your site uses, although there are obviously instances where that cannot be avoided.  Note, though, that there isn't currently a good way to migrate existing content from settings of old metadata to new ones.

9. I haven't found the information I need. Is there someone that can answer a specific question?
