How to Relate Items: Using Page Settings

How do you determine what pages are related to each other using ONE/Northwest's "audience-centric" extensions to Plone?

To begin, you need to make some content items such as news updates and event notices. For detailed information about creating specific content items, please see the Content Items In Depth article.

  1. Create a news, event, quote, or quiz content item by selecting an item from the 'add item' drop down menu.
  2. After filling out the basic information on the first page, click on 'next' instead of 'save'.  (You can also use the 'page settings' at the top of the page, although that won't save any changes you had just made.)
  3. In the page that follows you can select the audience, program and page goal for this content item. You can select multiple options from the audience and program fields by holding down the CTRL button on your keyboard (that's the Cmd key for Macs).  You should choose all the apply, but don't be too generous -- this is what makes "related" news or events "related"; you don't want that to be diluted.
  4. Next, select the page goal for this item.  We explain what this means in more depth later, but basically the higher up in your site's structure this particular page appears, the more general its page goal should be.
  5. By default, the checkbox labelled Should this page be available as a "related link"? is set to true. For the most part you'll need to leave it this way except if you are on one of your top level pages. You don't want your main navigation links to appear as a related link. (See related pages article to learn more)

Next, we'll teach you the specifics about page goals. You're almost ready to start using Pigeonhole!
