Oregon Natural Desert Association

Success Story: Clear Voices is a password-protected website that allows dozens of Oregon environmental groups to work together to track the progress of bills through the Oregon Legislature and to coordinate their strategy and message.

Oregon Natural Desert Association's mission is to protect, defend and restore the health of Oregon's native deserts. ONDA works with a broad base of activists, donors, community members, and volunteers in acheiving it's mission. The have over 500 members, and put on an annual desert film festival.

The Problem

ONDA was running it's major donor campaigns and it's membership program out of a database that had old, bad data, didn't deal with important constituent groups like volunteers and activists. In addition to having only a partial picture of ONDA's work, it was very difficult to get good information out of the database, causing challenges when it came to communicating with key constituents.

Bill Marlett, the exective director of ONDA approached ONE/Northwest for help in improving their constituent database situation.

The Solution

Over 2 months, we worked with ONDA to identify in great detail all the constituents, program areas, and processes they wanted to capture in their database. We then built out a customized Salesforce.com database to meet those needs.

ONDA's Salesforce database helps them to:

  • Run their major donor campaign: track prospects, assign board solicitors, track realized revenue, and send acknowledgements for received gifts
  • Run their membership program: track all members and their status, track monthly givers and process payments, easily send appeals to expiring members
  • Run their volunteer program: connect volunteer prospects with scheduled volunteer trips, track important metrics to program success (number of volunteers, miles of fence removed from wilderness areas, etc.), and easily track volunteer hours for volunteers who attend the trips.
  • Support myriad other processes: find and track retailers for the ONDA Desert Calendar sales program, track interest and attendance for house parties and festivals, and easily measure return on investment for appeals and events.

Salesforce.com, the web-based constituent relationship management system that we implemented for ONDA, gave us the flexibility to address all these diverse needs. ONDA has no recurring technology costs around their database, only the time and consulting help (if necessary) to make changes to their system.
